Moving Tips – Understanding Moving Terminology

Boxes, packing, storage…moving lingo we’re all familiar with, but what about IRR surcharge, weight additive and storage-in-transitUnited Van Lines offers a list of moving terms along with definitions so you aren’t left scratching your head come moving time. For example, as mentioned above:

Insurance-related general increase (IRR surcharge)

• The carrier’s tariff provides for a percentage adjustment to the transportation charge (and SIT Pickup and Delivery) to aid in the recovery of the increased cost of carrier’s and van operator’s liability insurance expenses.

Weight additive

• Some articles included in a shipment (i.e., camper shells, boats, canoes, boat trailers, etc.) are comparatively light and occupy space in the van that is not commensurate with their weight. For instance, one might load 4,000 pounds of furniture and cartons in the space taken by a 1,500-pound boat. To compensate for this inequity, our tariff provides a schedule of additional weights for such articles.

Storage-in-Transit (SIT)

• The temporary storage of your household goods in the warehouse of the carrier’s agent, pending further transportation at a later date. SIT service may not exceed a total of 180 calendar days. After 180 days, the interstate nature of the shipment ends and is converted to the rules of the local warehouseman.

Johnson Storage and Moving — a moving company history

For more than 100 Years, The Johnson family has been in the transportation business. Starting as a blacksmith and wagon building enterprise in 1900, our founder William Johnson, began moving and storing tourist trunks from Denver Union Station to hotels like the Oxford and the Brown Palace; this evolved into the moving and storage business. Johnson Storage and Moving Company became one of the first of its kind in the western United States. Many other firsts were to follow.
• Johnson Storage & Moving Company was one of the first regional transportation companies to retire its team of horses and to use motorized trucks.
• Johnson was one of the first Rocky Mountain region furniture warehousemen to join the National Furniture Warehouse Association in the early 1920’s, and the first to build a fireproof warehouse in Colorado.
• Unique amongst moving companies in America, Johnson was a founding agent of two major van lines–Allied Van Lines 1928, and United Van Lines as an agent-owned van line in 1947.

The firm is now owned and operated by fourth generation family members Mark & Jim Johnson. From its founding site at 221 Broadway in Denver, the company has expanded over the past ten decades to multiple locations spanning five states, including Security Van Lines of New Orleans, and Johnson operations throughout Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and California.

Empty Nesters & Retirees – Moving and storage

Things have changed. Your once bustling house now isn’t. Whether an empty nester or retiree, you may feel the need to change things up a bit. Here are some ideas to toss around:

Downsize to a smaller home:
Tired of painting your fence and pulling weeds? How about cleaning and maintaining rooms that are barely used? According to AARP, you can live in a Santa Fe, New Mexico senior community – no minimum age required – for $160,000. This will get you a 2 bed, 2 bath, modern kitchen, fireplace, patio & fenced yard. Lawn mowing, landscaping, garbage collection and exterior maintenance included in a reasonable monthly association fee.

• Places ranked: On Kiplinger’s Best Cities for Empty Nesters list 2010, Kiplinger’s describes Colorado Springs: “With Pikes Peak as a backdrop, Colorado Springs merges natural beauty with urban living. For active empty nesters, the city offers 70 miles of on-street bike lanes and over 100 regional and neighborhood parks.”

Move to a university town:
A hot trend is to retire in a university town. The population is educated and there is plenty of entertainment both for the culturally inclined and the sports enthusiast. Many universities now offer classes for seniors with areas of interest ranging from Shakespeare to history to Tai Chi.

• Places ranked: Topretirements.com lists Boulder, Colorado as a Top college town for retirement

Consider self storage:
A mother of two daughters, Wendy of Austin, Texas, will be a first-time empty nester this fall. Katie, the oldest, will be returning as a sophomore at the University of North Texas and the younger daughter, Beth will be a freshman at the University of Texas come late August. Not yet ready to retire, but thinking ahead ten years, Wendy and her husband are considering a move to Colorado where her sister is located. In the meantime, Wendy plans on helping her daughters pack for school. “They will be leaving soon and the girls and I are in the process of sorting through their things. It’s funny– they seem to be more ready to part with their belongings than I am, but I told them I’d keep their things safe in storage.”

How Denver Movers Actually Reduce the Stress of Relocation

There are few things in this world that are as frustrating and stressful as relocating to a new area.  It doesn’t matter if you’re moving across town or across the country, having to uproot, pack everything you own into boxes, tear down all your furniture and put it in a truck to take it somewhere else and do the opposite is a stress that you have to experience to understand.  Most people, once they’re settled in will say at some point or other “That’s the last time I’m ever going to do that.”  If you live in Denver and are relocating, Denver movers can almost totally alleviate all the stress involved with a move.

Moving involves a lot of details, many of which have to be handled at the location you’re moving to.  Not only do you have to find a great place to move to, but you’ve usually got a lot of services like power, water, cable or satellite TV and internet hooked up and ready for you so when you get there, you’re not sitting in the dark. Plus you have to set up with your current service providers to have them shut down the services at your current location when you move out.  Those headaches are some things only you can deal with and the stress of that is enough to set most people off.  And you’ve not even started the moving process yet, using Denver moving company or not.

One issue is the fact that you’re usually trying to accomplish packing and moving at the same time as you’re trying to work to keep your paycheck going and also trying to deal with the power company, etc. That’s a great reason to use Denver movers because they’ll come in with all the packing materials to pack your belongings properly and can have your home ready to load onto the truck within just a few hours. They’ve got all of the blankets and other protective materials so when the truck is loaded with your furniture, they won’t be damaged in any way. Then they’ll load the truck, transport your belongings to your new location and unload the truck for you. They may even set up your furniture and get it in place so all you’ve got left to do is unpack the boxes and put stuff away.

Regardless of why you’re moving or where you’re moving to, you’re going to have to deal with a lot of stress. Using a moving company is a great way to eliminate one huge layer of stress out of the situation by letting them do the ‘heavy lifting’ for you. Life is hard enough without adding the stress of having to pack up and move yourself so letting Denver movers do the big part for you will feel like a gift.

Johnson’s Instant Online Moving Quote: Better Than the Rest

Johnson’s Instant Online Moving Quote: Better Than the Rest

Moving can be an overwhelming experience, so anything that makes your move easier would be a big help. Our website now features an exciting, simple tool, the Instant Online Moving Quotes calculator, that works by taking specific information you enter into required fields, and you receive an estimate of the cost of your move instantaneously. You can use this online moving quote if you are moving across town or across the country.

Other companies offer moving quotes online, but theirs work differently than ours. When you visit another site and put in your moving information, that site, usually an “aggregator” site will send your information to 8 to 10 companies who will then contact you via phone or email trying to get your business. Your phone will ring off the hook, and you will get several emails each day from various moving companies.

But when you use our free online moving quote feature, we don’t share your information with any other company. We simply process the information and let you decide if you want to hire us for your moving needs. Unlike those other companies, we provide a real-time estimate and don’t make you wait 24 hours (or longer) while your information is passed on to other companies.

How does our instant online moving quote work? It’s simple! Click on the “Instant Quote” button on our Home page or any one of our other pages, fill in the city you’re moving from, the city you’re moving to, the number of rooms to be moved, an approximate move date, your name, phone number, and email address. Click “View Quote” and your free online moving quote is ready! If you would like more information about the services we provide or would like to schedule your move, simply contact us and we’ll help you get started on the journey to your new home.

Johnson Storage & Moving is a Colorado-based company with locations in five states, and for over 100 years, has been one of the leading local and long distance moving companies in the U.S.

Is Your Small Business Big Enough to Hire Office Movers?

As your small business grows there comes a time when you’ll actually outgrow the building you’re in. Whether you’re in manufacturing or a lawyer, you’ll have to find a bigger place, and then you’ll have to find office movers to take care of moving all of your equipment and furniture to the new location. While you may have a small business and may consider moving everything yourself, if you take a look at the numbers, you may find that you’ll save money by hiring movers instead.

To start with, get a quote from several office movers. That’ll give you a baseline number to begin your calculations. Next, get quotes for the trucks and/or trailers you’ll need to move your stuff. Add to that the costs for boxes and packing materials you’ll need. That should pretty much cover all the physical costs except for gasoline. Those numbers will give you a basic idea of how much moving yourself will cost.

However, that isn’t all of the costs that are involved. If you hire people to help you pack and move, there will be labor costs involved with them, plus you’ll have to take into account how much per hour your time is worth as well. Another aspect of moving, especially for manufacturing facilities is to take into account moving inventory and machinery. Once you add in all of these additional costs, then comparing that to the quotes from the office movers, you may be surprised at just how much money you’ll be able to save.

That’s because office movers do this for a living. They can pack your office, all your equipment and furniture and have it moved in a very short time frame. Not only are they smooth and efficient, they’ll have you in a position to be back up and running in as quickly as possible which actually means you’re back making money sooner than if you moved yourself. The least amount of down time you have means the least amount of money lost due to being unable to conduct business.

If you need to relocate your business, every aspect of the move needs to be examined. When you consider all the factors, as with everything else having to do with business, it all comes down to the bottom line. Regardless of the size of your business, having office movers come in and complete your move as quickly as possible is going to be the way to go since you’ll save money on the move and be back in business making money instead of being stuck in idle for days.
